Top 10 Off-Beat Roadside Attractions

From Amanda Galiano, for About.com

If you're looking for the out of the ordinary tourist attractions, Arkansas is a great place to find them! We might not have the world's largest frying pan, but we do have some interesting, odd and wild attractions.

Some interesting trivia, in the movie Elizabethtown, Orlando Bloom visits the 7-foot tall Jesus and Dinosaur World as his character spreads his father's ashes across the United States.

1. Alligator Farm & Merman

The alligator farm not only has a petting zoo & alligators but it also has a room with interesting artifacts, including a merman. Open every day of the year from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., except on Christmas Day. The Alligator food shows are from May 1 to October 15 on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 noon. Found on 847 Whittington in Hot Springs, AR: 1-800-750-7891.

2. Double Decker Outhouse

This unique attraction is a working outhouse but it's mostly just to get people to stop in The Booger Hollow Trading Post and visit the gift shop. If you happen to be driving by, you can't miss stopping and having your photo taken in front of it. It's found along Scenic 7 Byway, in Dover, AR.

3. Animal Actors Zoo

I remember going to this zoo as a child and being mesmerized by piano playing chickens, pigs that drove cars and cute little animal skits. The "zoo" has changed hands a few times over the years but it's still a great act to catch. Hot Springs used to be the home of two such places but they've condensed and the new place has a little from both. 210 Central Avenue, Hot Springs, AR: 501-623-9695.

4. Dinosaur World

Dinosaur World features life sized replicas of dinosaurs (although they may not be scientific replicas). They also have a statue of King Kong. It's a fun thing for kids of all ages. You can find it on Highway 187 north of Eureka Springs near Beaver Dam.

5. Popeye Statues

Did you know Arkansas was the spinach capital of the world? I didn't. However, the folks in Alma do! They have an 8-foot, fiberglass Popeye tribute in their town square to announce it. There are also Popeye statues in Lowell in front of the Allen Foods plant and on Highway 71B in Lowell.

6. Tiny Town

This is truly an amazing little town of miniatures. Most of the "tiny town" is handmade and intricately detailed. Tiny Town is touted as the world's largest animated miniature city and the world's largest indoor display. It's frequented by mini-celebrities like Mr. T. It can be found on Whittington Avenue in Hot Springs: 501-624-4742.

7. Museum of Automobiles

If you like cars, you'll like this museum. There are some "celebrity" cars but the coolest is the Climber. It's the only car ever built in Arkansas. The museum is near Petit Jean in Morrilton, Arkansas: 501-727-5427.

8. Saint Elizabeth's Chapel

This chapel is famous because you have to enter it through the Bell Tower. It's a beautiful chapel and it;s a neat little piece of history. It's adjacent to the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, 30 Crescent Drive: 501-253-9853.

9. World's Tallest Uncrucified Christ

What can you say about a seven story high Jesus? He is a part of the "Great Passion Play" and was built entirely by hand.

10. Gay Nineties Button and Doll Museum

This museum has button mosaics and dolls that have been collected over many years. It's attached to Onyx Cave too which is another attraction in itself. Onyx Cave, U.S. 62 East Eureka Springs: 501-253-9321.
