What:
The Mammoth Orange Cafe was built in 1965 by Earnestine Bradshaw. It was shaped like a giant orange to mimic the Orange Julius stands that were popping up all over California. Mrs. Bradshaw had worked at one in her youth. Mrs. Bradshaw passed away in 2007, but the Orange is still carrying on in her memory. It's still open today and operates as a dairy bar and cafe.
Additions and Repairs:
The Mammoth Orange was originally just the orange shaped building. Patrons ate in their cars or at the few seats around the orange. It was more like a drive-up drink stand. Later, the cinder block building surrounding the orange was added so that patrons could eat inside. The Orange has reportedly fallen into disrepair a few times in its relatively long life, but in 2010 it looks great.
The Food:
Talking to Redfield residents, I get that the ice cream, milkshakes and other treats are the most popular parts of the Mammoth Orange menu. The milkshakes are, indeed, pretty good but probably not worth driving from Little Rock to Redfield for. The food is also ok, but only worth the stop if you're going that direction. It's typical dairy bar food.
The Atmosphere:
The decor inside the orange is just as bright as the outside. Customers come and go that the staff greets by name, etc. It's a nice, sunny atmosphere, like almost any dairy bar around the country.
