Top 16 Ice Cream Shops and Dairy Bars

Who among us doesn't love ice cream? It's almost the perfect summer treat. Cool, sweet and creamy, it tingles your mouth and gives you a brain freeze that brings you back to your childhood. I prefer to enjoy ice cream year-round. It's a little reminder that winter will be over and summer will come again. Here are some of the best places to enjoy ice cream in Little Rock.

1. Scrumdiliumptious

Scrumdiliumptious is just plain fun.   they have all sorts of ice cream concoctions, including shakes, floats and brownies covered in ice cream with fun, Harry Potter and Willy Wonka themes.  Fun atmosphere.  They use Edy's ice cream.   Located in Sherwood, 8000 Arkansas 107, Suite 7.  501-835-3300

2. The Purple Cow

When people talk about The Purple Cow, it's not the burgers and fries or soups and salads they mention, even though those are great too. People talk about the monster milkshakes. Try the purple vanilla or my personal favorite, the peanut butter. The Purple Cow is pricey for an everyday ice cream treat but it's a nice sit down restaurant with something for kids. Two locations: 8026 Cantrell Road & 11602 Chenal Parkway. 221-3555/224-443.

3. Asher Dairy Bar

When I went to Wilson Elementary, we used to visit this place every Friday. The dipped cones with the hard chocolate shell are still my personal fave. The soft serv and everything else is also worth sampling. There are some indoor seats but ice cream is best enjoyed in your car or outside. They also have other dairy bar foods like hamburgers and hot dogs. Located at 7105 Colonel Glenn Road (once called Asher Avenue), Little Rock, AR. 501-562-1085.

4. Dreamy Spoon Frozen Yogurt

The Dreamy Spoon self-serve frozen yogurt is located in Maumelle, but it's worth the drive. This is a locally owned spot with fun flavors you won't find at the chains plus a great atmosphere. They use fresh fruit toppings and try to use organic whenever possible. Located on 115 Audubon Dr. #1 in Maumelle, 501-851-2448.

5. Scoop Dog

Hot dogs and frozen custard, who could ask for anything more?  Fun dog theme with lots of interesting hot dogs.  Located in North Little Rock, 5508 John F. Kennedy Blvd. NLR. 501-753-5407.

6. ZaZa Fine Salad and Wood-Oven Pizza Co

ZaZa's is a restaurant, but they have fresh gelato. The gelato is reason to visit by itself. Located at 5600 Kavanaugh Blvd. (behind the Heights Theater), 501-661-9292.

7. Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt

This is the best self-serve frozen yogurt place in Little Rock.  Kids and adults can mix and match flavors, toppings and sauces to make a unique yogurt creation.  Located in the Pleasant Ridge Shopping Center, 11525 Cantrell Rd, 501-227-4522.

8. Bruster's Real Ice Cream

Bruster's is a national chain. Their options include fun sundaes, waffles cones, cakes and pies, shakes and smoothies.  They also have hot dogs.  14710 Cantrell Road, 501-868-9522.

9. Wink's

This is a nice little dairy bar serving up burgers, dairy treats and it's locally owned. Located in North Little Rock at 2900 E. Washington. 501-945-9025.

10. Shake's

ShakesAmanda Galiano

Shake's doesn't have ice cream. They have frozen custard. If you've never tried frozen custard, you're in for a treat. From the first bite, you know you're not eating ice cream. It's much smoother and creamier. It tastes like you're eating silk. Don't be fooled though, a cup of Shake's is just as calorie laden as a cup of any ice cream you can find. It's hard to say which is better, ice cream or custard. I say try them both! Located at 12011 Westhaven Dr, close to Chenal Parkway. 501-224-0150
