Top 6 Ice Cream Shops and Dairy Bars

From Amanda Galiano, for About.com

Who among us doesn't love ice cream? It's almost the perfect summer treat. Cool, sweet and creamy, it tingles your mouth and gives you a brain freeze that brings you back to your childhood. I prefer to enjoy ice cream year-round. It's a little reminder that winter will be over and summer will come again. Here are some of the best places to enjoy ice cream in Little Rock.

1. Cold Stone Creamery

Cold Stone CreameryAmanda Galiano
A new generation of ice cream has moved to Little Rock and the best of the new ice cream shops in town is Cold Stone. Cold Stone Creamery is a chain that makes great ice cream. It's heaven for ice cream lovers. You can mix in any flavor and topping you want. I've yet to taste a bad flavor. You can sit indoors or outdoors on benches. Located at 12800 Chenal Parkway (it's on Chenal Parkway across from Old Navy & Petco) in West Little Rock. 501-225-7000.

2. Shake's

Shake's doesn't have ice cream. They have frozen custard. If you've never tried frozen custard, you're in for a treat. From the first bite, you know you're not eating ice cream. It's much smoother and creamier. It tastes like you're eating silk. Don't be fooled though, a cup of Shake's is just as calorie laden as a cup of any ice cream you can find. It's hard to say which is better, ice cream or custard. I say try them both! Located at 12011 Westhaven Dr, close to Chenal Parkway. 501-224-0150

3. The Purple Cow

When people talk about The Purple Cow, it's not the burgers and fries or soups and salads they mention, even though those are great too. People talk about the monster milkshakes. Try the purple vanilla or my personal favorite, the peanut butter. The Purple Cow is pricey for an everyday ice cream treat but it's a nice sit down restaurant with something for kids. Two locations: 8026 Cantrell Road & 11602 Chenal Parkway. 221-3555/224-443.

4. Asher Dairy Bar

When I went to Wilson Elementary, we used to visit this place every Friday. The dipped cones with the hard chocolate shell are still my personal fave. The soft serv and everything else is also worth sampling. There are some indoor seats but ice cream is best enjoyed in your car or outside. They also have other dairy bar foods like hamburgers and hot dogs. Located at 7105 Colonel Glenn Road (once called Asher Avenue), Little Rock, AR. 501-562-1085.

5. Dairyland Drive-in

Dairyland Drive-in is in North Little Rock but it's close to LR & worth the trip. It's one of Arkansas' only remaining dairy bars, complete with the sliding glass window and the classic dairy bar food (hamburgers, hot dogs & ice cream) you remember. It's a great place to take the kids when they want a nice treat! The milkshakes are excellent! Located at 2306 AR 161, North Little Rock. 501-945-4593. Outdoor seating only, don't expect AC!

6. TCBY Yogurt

You can drive through and get a treat or use the indoor and outdoor seating. The name stands for "This Country's Best Yogurt" and their product, while probably not the best, is pretty good. TCBY actually stated in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1981. They make great cakes too. There are three TCBY locations in Little Rock on Cantrell, Airport Drive and West Markham and one in North Little Rock in Lakewood.
