Garden Centers and Nurseries

Little Rock soil is diverse. Our weather is crazy. Who knows what will grow here? The best way to find out what plant is right for your yard is to find someone at the nursery and talk about your specifics. Some nurseries will even test a soil sample for you. Some will design your landscape into a garden paradise. These are my favorite nurseries in the area.

1. River Valley Horticultural

This is an great nursery with very knowledgeable staff and a large selection of plants. The nursery is on over 30 acres with 21 different greenhouses. They also carry bulk products like dirt and mulch. Located at 21701 Lawson Road, 501-821-4770.

2. Horticare

Horticare is a full service nursery with a wholesale department, but they also do residential design, installation and maintenance. They have a very knowledge;e staff that can tackle almost any question. Located at 7901 Stagecoach Road, L501-407-2727.

3. Botanica Gardens

Botanica Gardens is Chris Olsen's newest landscape design firm. They do full service landscape installation, but the location has plenty of plants and decor items. They also do some interior design, and party and holiday decorations. Located at 1601 Rebsamen Park Road, 501-614-3000.

4. Green Thumb

If you want a koi pond, this is the place to go. Other designers will build you a water feature, but these guys know koi best. They also have the best selection of fish and water plants, but water gardening is all they do. They are located at 28025 Nichols Loop Road, 501-821-4445.

5. Cantrell Gardens

Cantrell gardens has some cool concrete pieces and a large selection of plants. They aren't as large as some of the other nurseries mentioned, but they do have a good selection, particularly of common perennials, annuals and shrubs. Located at 7800 Cantrell Rd, 501-225-1030.

6. Custom Landscape & Nursery

Custom Landscape and Nursery is the largest nursery in Central Arkansas with over 80 acres of plants. If you can't find it there, you won't find it. They offer design consultation and wholesale items. Located at 190 Bull Creek Road in Mount Vernon, 501-849-3147.

7. The Good Earth

The Good Earth offers full service installation and maintenance of landscape, but also has a rather large nursery with trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials. Located at 15601 Cantrell Road, 501-868-4666.

8. Home Depot / Lowe's / Wal-Mart

One of the bad things about the mass stores is that they often put plants out that really shouldn't be planted yet, and sometimes the staff isn't trained well. If you do your own research and know what to look for, you can save some money because many plants are cheaper at big box stores. However, especially if you are new to gardening, you can waste more than you will save on plants that won't thrive. Many times the local nurseries will have specials or loyalty programs that make their prices lower than Home Depot, so don't just assume the prices will be higher at a local nursery.
