I've been wondering what was going to go into the Stone Ward building that hosted Nu. Late last year, Velo Rouge, or Red Bicycle in French, opened up in a part of the building.Velo Rouge is a French brasserie/bistro. When you walk in the door, you're met with a red bicycle hanging on the wall and, if you ever visited Nu, you're struck with how much smaller the space seems. It is smaller-an upscale restaurant is planned for the back. It may be smaller, but that helps it's homey elegance. Jeans would feel just as at home here as a suit and tie.
We had pommes frites (fries - $4), roasted free-range chicken ($16), endive salad ($7.50) and chocolate pot de creme.
I spent many an hour in Paris at this little bistro that served some of the best pommes frites and roasted chicken I've ever tasted. The pommes frites here top them. They're shoe string fries that are tossed in herbs and served with a spicy ketchup. The ketchup and herbs are probably geared towards American tastes, but they were perfect. The chicken could use a little work. It was slightly dry, but seasoned well. The salad was tossed with bleu cheese and walnuts and was quite nice.
I always peek at the other patrons. One couple ordered Cote de Boeuf, which is a 48oz Ribeye ($65 - for 2+) and another steak frites, an 8 oz filet with fries ($31). Both looked worth trying.
The dessert offerings ($6) are highly recommended. Chocolate pot de creme is like a creme brulee. It is more pudding-like and instead of the crusty sugar top, it's topped with whipped cream. They had a delicious apple dish too.
