The most dangerous and common insects that live in Arkansas forests are ticks. Certain ticks can carry Lyme Disease which is hard to treat. Equally annoying are the many mosquitoes you can find here. Mosquitoes breed in water so they are more prevalent near waterways (where you often find the best camp spots). You should be on the lookout for wasps, bees, spider, chiggers and yellow jackets as well.

Ticks

  • Repel 'em. To protect yourself from tick bites, always wear some type of tick repellent on your clothes. Tuck the legs of your trousers into your socks and spray repellent on pants, socks and boots.

  • Check yourself. When you come back in from being out in the woods, always check yourself for ticks and remove any you find. Generally, a tick will let go when you take hold of it. If it does not, you should gently grasp it with tweezers or forceps and pull. Make sure that all parts of the tick are removed or you could get an infection.

    Stinging Insects

  • Repel 'em. Wear repellant on your body and clothes. If you can find an all purpose repellant that repels all types of insects that would be best.

  • Keep garbage under control. Food garbage attracts yellow jackets. You should keep food garbage away from your main campsite to prevent a swarm.

    Spiders

  • Beware the brown recluse. As their name suggests, they like to live in dark, confined spaces like shoes. A brown recluse bite is painful and potentially harmful. In order to avoid bites, you should be sure to shake out shoes, clothes and bedding before using it. Black widows and wolf spiders are also common to the Arkansas wilds.

    Chiggers

  • Repel 'em. Wear repellant on your body and clothes. If you can find an all purpose repellant that repels all types of insects that would be best.

  • Wear loose clothing and avoid them. Chiggers prefer to bite humans with tight fitting clothing. You should avoid sitting on grass in areas where there are lots of chiggers.

  • Take a warm bath. If you have just been in a chigger infested area and you have the ability to take a warm bath, do it. The warm soapy water will remove the chiggers before they have a chance to attach.
