Daffodils are the symbol or spring and are one of the easiest plants to grow! Your yard can look like Wye Mountain every year.
Difficulty Level: easy Time Required: 60 minutes
Here's How:
- Pick a sunny location. Daffodils do well in garden beds or window boxes as long as there is a lot of sun.
- Purchase high quality bulbs that are large with many points. Generally, the larger the bulb is the bigger the flower will be. Points are future blooms.
- There are many species of daffodil. Read the requirements for the species of daffodil you choose. Some species are more sensitive than others.
- In Little Rock, plant in early March or April. Daffodils bloom as soon as the weather starts to warm up.
- Loosen the soil around where you want to plant the bulbs for better drainage.
- Plant bulbs 3 to 5 inches deep with at least 3 inches between each bulb.
- Plant bulbs with the root tips down and the "crown" (the pointed part of the bulb) towards the sky.
- Cover the bulbs with soil and moisten with water and fertilizer (such as miracle grow for bulbs and flowers).
- Enjoy the flowers!
- We are accustomed to seeing the traditional yellow daffodil, however, they come in many colors and sizes. For a colorful flower bed you can plant many different species side by side.
- If your soil drains poorly mix in one of the commercial bulb soils before you plant according to package directions.
- Daffodils are one of the easiest bulbs to grow and are tolerant of a variety of conditions. Once they are established they will bloom year after year.
