Arkansas Children's Hospital ICU

Stories From Children's Hospital

By Amanda Galiano, About.com

I think everyone in Little Rock appreciates the gem we have in AR Children's Hospital. Not only are they on the cutting edge of medical technology, but they are also filled with caring staff. It would be easy to be depressing in a place where critically ill children are seen everyday. However, Children's Hospital seem to maintain an atmosphere of hope and happiness in spite of all the odds. A new series on ABC is bringing this to the nation's attention by focusing on the cardiac transplant unit.

The few times I've volunteered doing various things and Children's Hospital I have always been amazed at the doctors and nurses. You can tell that it wasn't just for the cameras, they really do love their jobs. It takes a special person to comfort a child and a family facing horrible illness and they see it all at Children's - from sprains and flues to cancer and transplants.

Even more amazing, to me, is the spirit that the children have. These are often children who worry more about their parents than themselves. I've met kids that are so young, yet they seem to know more about life than I do. It's inspiring and saddening at the same time.

Here are some stories about the hospital from around the web from patients and visitors.

From the Forum "I just wanted to say that I spent quite a bit of time in your lovely town from August 25, 2000 to long about October 30 when my grandson had to be in the Arkansas Children's Hospital following his birth in Texarkana.

I cant say enough about the hospital and the staff. They are the nicest bunch of people you could hope to meet. So helpful, so dedicated. My grandson was in the ICU section so we could not be there with him all the time, so we had chances to explore the town. I especially love all the health-food stores there. Little Rock must be a very health-conscious town!

Our grandson eventually had to be transferred to Houston, Texas Children's Hospital for open heart surgery as the heart surgeon at Little Rock had retired and his replacement wouldn't be there for several more months, and my grandson couldn't wait that long!! The difference in the two hospitals....the atmosphere...was like leaving Earth and going to the Moon. Don't get me wrong!! Dr. Charles Frazier who is head over the heart department in Houston HIMSELF operated on Matthew and their staff is most dedicated too, but they are dedicated mostly on the children, which is a good thing, but families of the children need help too. And that is what Little Rock provided...a loving atmosphere for children AND their families." - NEESIESE
