Top 8 Garden Centers

From Amanda Galiano, for About.com

Little Rock soil is so diverse that it's hard to say what will grow best in your yard. Hostas and daylillies will grow almost anywhere and they are bright and colorful. Some daylillies look almost tropical. The best way to find out what plant is right for your yard is to find someone at the nursery and talk about your yard. Some nurseries will even test a soil sample for you.

1) Green Thumb

Located on Bowman, it's a beautiful nursery. They specialize in water gardens but they have a large selection of land plants too. Some of their prices are a bit steep but as the cliche goes, you get what you pay for. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful but they do seem, at times, to be understaffed. You can feed their huge koi fish while you wait.

2) Horticare Nursery

Located on Stagecoach, this is a huge nursery. They deliver, have horticulturists on staff, landscape and can help you with any garden problems. Large selection and competitive prices.

3) Home Depot

I don't think you get the same care and attention you get a locally owned nursery but Home Depot has an awesome selection of plants, a guarantee and unbeatable prices. Some of their staff is less than knowledgeable so you might need to do a little research. Great for the gardener on a budget.

4) Cantrell Gardens

Located on Cantrell, they have a wide variety of plants year round. They also have a knowledgeable staff and very good prices.

5) Lakewood Gardens

Located on North Hills Blvd. in North Little Rock, this nursery has a nice selection and a knowledgeable staff. Their prices are a little expensive.

6) Green Tree Nursery

They are located on Rodney Parham and they look like a typical nursery. You can find a large selection of trees and shrubs and greenhouses full of plants and a knowledgable staff. You won't have any trouble finding someone to help you here. They have a few water gardening supplies.

7) Hocott's Garden Center

Located on Kavanaugh, they have a nice selection of plants and a landscape architect on staff.

8) Wal-Mart

Don't expect much advice from the staff, although some do know their stuff. They have a large selection of more common plants but they don't have a lot of unusual things. The prices can't be beat.
