Census 2000

Northwest Arkansas Grows

By Amanda Galiano, About.com

The results of the 2000 census are finally in for Arkansas. The census brings good news for most major Arkansas counties and cities as most showed some growth. However, certain counties and cities had remarkable growth. Benton County grew 57% and Washington County grew 39%. Conway had 63% growth and Springdale had 53%. Little Rock only experienced small growth of 4.2%. Surprising to me is North Little Rock's -2.1% growth.

Benton and Washington counties were the counties with the largest growth and they are both located in Northwest Arkansas. Why are these areas so popular? I can't say for sure, but one thing that has to be attracting people is the beautiful scenery of the area. Northwest Arkansas has Bull Shoals, the Buffalo National Park, Eureka Springs, Mount Magazine, Lake Dardanale, Devil's Den and some of the most beautiful scenery in Arkansas. These same attractions make it Arkansas's premiere tourist location. However, good jobs, big industry and great public schools are undoubtedly are a factor.

Northwest Arkansas seems to offer the natural beauty and peacefulness of the country along with all the amenities and conveniences of the city. However, a population boom might change that and the cities are struggling to build more schools, keep good jobs available and keep the cities attractive to potential relocators.
