The Demise of the 'Blades

Hockey [NOT] In Arkansas

By Amanda Galiano, About.com

I'll miss the Riverblades. I won't miss them because I was at every game. I wasn't at many games. I won't miss them because I'm a huge hockey fan. I like hockey enough but I'm not over the top. I won't even miss them because of Rocky, the Riverblade mascot, who tends to show up everywhere!

Then why will I miss them? I liked having the option of going to a hockey game. I liked having a city with a ECHL team. I liked the Riverblades! They were a blast. If you never went to a Riverblade's game, you missed something. They were a great part of our city that is gone. There were a fun "night out" option that we no longer have.

They're being sold because the were not profitable. However, none of the remaining professional sports franchises in central Arkansas (The Twisters and the Travelers) are extremely profitable. It's sad that a city that supports college football so much can't support a professional team!

I blame people like myself for this fact. I love the fact that we have these professional teams and I like going to games however I don't go enough. I probably only go to one game a year. I don't support the city enough. I'm sure many of you are in the same boat.

So, in the future I implore all of us to support the athletes in our city more. Go to games. Get season passes. Do what you can to show your support to the remaining teams in Arkansas. If professional hockey (or the Riverblades themselves) ever show up here again, support it! The city as a whole will miss it when it when it's gone.
