According to the Eat Arkansas blog, Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken is coming to the River Market. There goes my excuse for ever visiting Memphis again. I'm almost serious. I've made trips to Memphis just to eat fried chicken. Gus's is the best chicken I've ever had in my life. It's fried perfectly, juicy and has just the right amount of kick. I used to bring people to Gus's when I wrote about Memphis. When people ask where to eat in Memphis, Gus's ranks over the Rendezvous or anyplace on Beale. It's so good that in college, when I went through my hard core vegan phase, I would forgo all my ethics for a piece of chicken. My favorite fried chicken in Little Rock is currently at Bobby's Country Cookin'. If Gus's is anything like the original location, Bobby's will soon be number 2.
The location in the River Market (the space formerly occupied by Redbones) is a little more upscale than the Memphis location, and I hope that doesn't take away from its charm. Gus's in Memphis is very casual. The line outside the door at lunch often winds into places where you probably wouldn't feel comfortable standing alone. That location in the River Market has had quite a few unsuccessful restaurants. Maybe Gus's will stick. I think it will be a great addition. I know tourists often visit this site looking for restaurants that offer "real Southern cooking." Having some right in the River Market is a great idea.
The original Gus's is located on 310 S Front St in Memphis, TN. There are a few other locations in Memphis and Nashville now too. I honestly haven't tried any of the newer locations, because the original Gus's is just as close. They only do chicken and sides. The sides are just so-so, but the chicken makes up for it.
I'll be sure to try it out as soon as it opens, though no timeline is known yet. I might have to go try the original Gus's again first. You know, for comparison's sake.
