The Arkansas Times beat me to the punch, but today's Valentine's ideas are all about getting sweet treats for your special someone. Since the Times blog focused on a bunch of different sweets, I'm going to focus on my favorite sweet: cupcakes.
There are several cupcake purveyors around town, but my favorite is still Cupcakes on Kavanaugh (and also in Pleasant Ridge). The one pictured is a vanilla, but I love their chocolate. The icing is great. I'm normally not a fan of huge mounds of icing, but theirs is perfect. Their cake is sometimes a tad dry, but it pairs well with the icing. If you like a really moist cake, you'll probably be disappointed.
I recently tasted cupcakes from Mickey's Special Affairs and The Dreamy Cupcake. Both were also good. I liked the cream cheese icing from The Dreamy Cupcake. The cake at Mickey's was great (the strawberry is the best). Mickey's is really inexpensive at about $1 each. My other favorites: Brown Sugar Bakeshop, Sugar Shack and Cakes by Sam. It's really hard to pick a best cupcake. They're all good, and all the shops offer different flavors daily. Brown Sugar always has the most unique flavors.
I have to mention Dempsey's Bakery for the gluten free crowd. I've actually never had a cupcake there, but the cakes are awesome. It's hard to tell they're gluten free!
The Arkansas Times mentioned that Brown Sugar Bakeshsop was going to have delicious looking chocolate dipped strawberries for the big day. The only downside to Brown Sugar is that they often sell out of the good stuff if you don't get there quick. So, you better get to planning now.
Before you ask, yes I have tried Gigi's Cupcakes. The franchise just opened a location in Little Rock. The plus side to Gigi's, in my mind, is the variety they are able to offer. They offer about 10 cupcake flavors a day. For me, they are too heavy on the icing. I couldn't believe how much icing they put on the cupcakes. I like a good cake too. If you like mounds and mounds of icing, you'll love them! I think Gigi's is for those odd ducks who lick the icing off the cake and toss the cake.
Me? I'll probably stick to the local faves!
