Looking for a special gift? The Great Escapes art auction this Wednesday might be the place to find it. The Little Rock Zoo is celebrating the holidays with some special paintings by some special artists.
Many animals at the Little Rock Zoo paint as part of their enrichment process. Enrichment is part of what zoos do to keep the animal's minds and bodies active. Giving them novel things to do provides them with mental and physical stimulation.
Some of the animals paint with their bodies, others with actual brushes. Some of them scurry across the canvas, like the armadillos and penguins. Others, like the Sakis in the photo, actually seem to be contemplating their modern works of art as they add to them.
Many of these modern masterpieces will be on silent auction at Boswell Mourot Fine Art on 5815 Kavanaugh Boulevard December 12 (Wednesday) from 6 to 9 p.m. The animals not only paint canvas, but they also add their special flair to Christmas ornaments. Ornaments make great gifts, and they will be for sale at the gallery. I don't think anyone will be expecting an ornament painted by a rhino or a sloth.
Admission to the event is free and there will be wine and hors d'oeuvres. The Facebook event page has some adorable photos of the creation of some of the art you'll be able to bid on, including a photo of a sloth painting an ornament with her nose.
All proceeds go to the Little Rock Zoo American Association of Zoo Keepers chapter.
