I've been getting a lot of questions about the Christmas parade and Capitol lighting this week. Here's some general information to help you enjoy the parade.
- The parade starts Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 3:00 p.m.
- The parade starts at 2nd and Broadway, follows Broadway to Capitol Avenue, then proceeds down Capitol Avenue to the State Capitol. Here's the official parade route map.
- Santa and Mrs. Claus are in the parade. There are also going to be penguins from the zoo.
- The Capitol lighting takes place around sunset (5-6 p.m.) They generally have carolers and open the Capitol up so you can see all the decorations after the fireworks. Hot cocoa is normally available too.
- There's a Jingle Bell run/walk earlier in the day which is a lot of fun. It starts at 11 a.m. People wear costumes and bells.
- The parade and lighting are free, but bring some cash. Vendors are sell holiday themed trinkets for kids, cotton candy, etc..
I think that's all you need to know.
Food around the parade route is sparse, but there are a few places nearby. You could technically camp out the whole time. Last year I had someone get a pizza while I waited. The parade is never standing room only, though. It gets tighter near the Capitol, but your kids can always squeeze in and get a good view of Santa.
