Weekend Wednesdays: Does Your Cardboard Float?

Follow me on:

Two great local traditions are taking place this very weekend.  The first is the Altus Grape Festival and Grape Stomp.

Altus puts on a great festival, with lots of wine, music, fireworks and grape everything.  You can eat them, stomp on them and drink them. They also have grape games and arts and crafts.  If you like grapes, this is the festival for you! It's Friday and Saturday, and Altus is about 2 hours from Little Rock.

Tontitown has a grape festival too, but it's August 3-7.  I've never been to that festival, but it looks like it has grape stomps, carnival rides and music.  Tonitown is just north of Fayetteville, so it's about 3 and a half hours from Little Rock.

The next great Arkansas tradition is one of my favorites.  It's the famous cardboard boat race!  It takes place in Heber Springs on Sandy Beach at 10:00 on July 31, 2010.  This event has been featured on the Discovery Channel and every time I pick up a book on unusual tourism or festivals, I see photos from this race.  It really is a giant (and elaborate) cardboard boat race, with actual cardboard boats.  A lot of them sink before they finish the race.  Heber Springs is about an hour an a half drive from Little Rock.

July 29 - 31, 2010

  • Alice's Tea Party at the Museum of Discovery - a celebration of the Alice in Wonderland exhibit.
  • HOG Rally in Hot Springs.  These aren't Razorback hogs, but the kind you ride.  It's a bike show with live music, vendors and more.

  • Go Stargazing at 9:30 p.m. at Pinnacle Mountain State Park.   Call 501-868-5806.
