Family Fridays: The Museum of Discovery and Alice's Wonderland

By , About.com Guide   July 16, 2010

Follow me on:

I was driving past downtown yesterday and I saw a huge rabbit with a pocket-watch over the Little Rock skyline.  If anyone has seen that rabbit too, you're not going crazy.  The rabbit is for a new exhibit at the Museum of Discovery.  Alice's Wonderland started May 31 continues through September 15.

If you've never been, the Museum of Discovery is a fun filled, hands-on science museum.  It's always fun, and this exhibit is well done.  I think little girls will really love it, but it has some fun stuff for little boys too.  It's aimed at children aged 3-10.

In the exhibit, your kids will get to explore some the science relating to Alice's wonderland adventure.  The exhibit is filled with mathematical and literary puzzles, hands-on exhibits and fun quotes and scenes from the story.   You become Alice as your crawl through the rabbit hole and enter a weird and wacky world of illusion and puzzles.  You even get to help set up a tea party just as wacky as the one the book and play a crazy game of croquet.

As an adult, I wondered how someone could explore the science behind Lewis Carroll.  There is NO science behind Lewis Carroll.  Somehow, the museum sneaks some science in, so that even the math puzzles have that "Wonderland" absurdity to them.  I've gotten great reviews from the kids I asked about it.

The Museum of Discovery is open Monday - Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.  Admission is $7 for kids, $8 for adults.  Located in the River Market at  500 President Clinton Ave. Suite 150.

Thanks for visiting Alice’s Wonderland! Isn’t it fascinating how much science and math is ‘hidden’ in the work of Lewis Carrol? We’re glad you had fun and hope you’ll return in late September for Harry’s Big Adventure! We’d love to give you a sneak preview if you like! Just contact me at 501 396 7050; choose extension 0 and ask for me.
Cheers!

I admit to being disappointed with the exhibit.

First off, it’s a tiny exhibit. You walk in and there are several Alice artifacts to your left. None of my children even paused to look at that display. There is a very small tunnel for the kids to crawl through that is “the rabbit hole”. The coolest part of the exhibit was the hall of doors that gets smaller as you walk through it. Other than that, the crazy game of croquet..? Was that the miniature golf-type tables that are nothing like croquet?

Either they didn’t have the tea party set up while we were there, or it was so boring I can’t remember it. When we rounded the corner, my seven year old daughter exclaimed, “That was it?!”

The huge rabbit with the pocket watch over the Little Rock skyline was the most exciting part of the exhibit.

I do hope that Harry’s Big Adventure is a lot better than Alice’s.
