Arkansas and the Fish Stimulus

Monday June 15, 2009
Did you know that Arkansas has a $167 million aquaculture industry? This industry has an economic impact of over $1.2 billion in the Delta region of Arkansas. According to Pine Bluff's National Aquaculture Association, Arkansas ranks #2 in catfish production, and #1 in bait fish, goldfish, sportfish, largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass and Chinese carp production.

Many Arkansans enjoy fishing as recreation, but it's also big business. Recreational fishing is estimated to bring in $440 million a year.

That means we really love fish in Arkansas. Apparently, those in DC do too. A package for the aquaculture industry includes 50 million to be used on fish feed. The money will be distributed based on amounts of feed utilized in 2007. Feed prices have jumped almost 50 percent, leaving farmers footing the bill. Many cannot afford it, and distributors will not buy higher priced fish. They have no way to offset the costs.

Senator Blanche Lincoln helped push the bill through.

Makes me hungry for catfish! Who wants to head to the Flying Fish?
