Why Razorback Fans Are Fat

A new study by UALR looks at the link between avid sports fandom and obesity and heart disease. The study says avid sports fans consume more fast food and alcoholic beverages year-round, skip breakfast and eat fewer vegetables than those who don't care about sports. This puts them at high risk for diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Sorry Razorback fans. Read more of the article.

That's not surprising to me. It does seems like most of my friends who have time to actually follow football have little time to actually do active things. It is a bit ironic that the people who enjoy sporting events so much don't actually like participating in them. If you like sports so much, get off the couch and toss a football around yourself.

The researchers suggests targeted marketing towards sports fans suggesting that they get fit and develop healthy habits. I don't think that would work. I think everyone knows sitting on the couch and drinking beer is not exactly the way to a long, healthy life.

Enjoying a good ball game is not, by itself, a health risk. There are healthy sports fans. I see them at Razorback games. Other studies have found that watching and enjoying sports is good for your mental outlook. I think it's part of the group bonding experience that comes from rooting for a team.

I couldn't find a link to the actual article. If anyone has one, please comment. I would like to read more about it.
