Gustav in Arkansas: Help Them Out

Tuesday September 2, 2008
Gustav didn't just bring the rain to Arkansas, it also brought over 5,000 people from Louisiana. The Arkansas Democrat Gazette statistics state that 5,400 are in shelters around the state and in Fort Chaffee. An unknown number of evacuees is staying in hotels around the state. Many of these same people spent August 3 years ago in Arkansas because of Katrina.

You can help. The Red Cross is accepting donations. Call 1-866-GETINFO for info on how you can help shelter victims or for info on how to find shelter.

This time evacuation plans included pets, and many dogs and cats were evacuated to Arkansas too. The humane societies of Pulaski (501-227-6166‎) and Saline (501-557-5518‎) counties and Little Rock Animal Services have taken in dozens of pets of hurricane victims. They could use donations of food and other items too. Call them and see what you can do.

Luckily, Gustav has calmed down and everyone, even pets, should be going home soon. The organizations will still need donations so they can step in next time.

If you've been evacuated and you're not heading home today, the Travelers have opened Dickey-Stephens play-off games to evacuees. If you've been evacuated, just show your state ID and you can get in for free. The games are Wednesday and Thursday at 7:10.
