Park A Day: Devil's Den

Monday June 30, 2008
On June 30, 2002 a giant “Iron Mike” statue was dedicated at Devil's Den State park. The statue commemorates the park’s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) heritage. At the time, it was the 14th statue of "Iron Mike" in the nation. The statue depicts a man with boots, work pants and an ax. The statue and many others like it are a symbol of what the CCC did for our state parks and are based on a 1938 oil painting. Check out a great photo of the statue on Flickr.

Devil's Den is one of my favorite parks. I'm sure that's partly because of the work done by the CCC. You'll find lots of little caverns and coves to investigate. Even back country areas are available with special permits. They also have beautiful hiking trials, an 8 acre lake and expansive forests. It's a great park that we should all be proud of.

Camping and cabins are available. You can follow the title link for more information.

thanks for highlighting my picture on your blog. Imagine my surprise when I bumped into another “Iron Mike” right here in Dallas recently! I’ll have to post a pic of him soon.
