Park A Day: Village Creek State Park

Tuesday June 24, 2008
I wrote about Crowley's Ridge when I wrote about Crowley's Ridge State park earlier this month. The "ridge" is 210 miles in length and rises 200 feet in some areas. It's a very unique geological feature that many Arkansans don't even know exists. It's not quite as spectacular as the grand canyon, but much cheaper to visit and some points along the ridge are breathtaking. Village Creek State Park is along the ridge, but it's located in Wynne, about 2 hours away from Crowley's Ridge State Park.

Development on Village Creek State Park started on June 24, 1974. The park opened in June of 1976. The dedication was a big deal and was part of a celebration of the American bicentennial in Arkansas. It attracted the famous and over 20,000 visitors. It was the Clinton library opening of its time. Today it is the second largest park in the state park system, the largest being Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area in Roger.

The park has two lakes with bream, catfish, crappie and bass. Boat, bicycle and pedal boat rentals are available during the spring and summer seasons. The park is equipped with playgrounds, pavilions, sporting fields, a driving range and plenty of trails. A golf course is coming soon.

You can camp in Village Creek or stay in one of the modern cabins. They even have a horse camp and an equestrian trail.

You can call for more info 870-238-9406.
