Park A Day: Cossatot River State Park

According to state park history, on June 13 of 1989, then governor Bill Clinton declared the 90s the decade of the environment at Cossatot Falls. Clinton would come back a little over one year later to announce his 5 year plan for tourism.

Why did Clinton choose this spot? It is one of the most scenic areas in the state. The park's main feature is the Cossatot River. It makes for a great hiking, fishing or floating destination depending on the water level. It's one of the best places for whitewater rafting in the country and renowned as the best whitewater float stream in mid-America. Forget the Buffalo, these are class III rapids (and, accordingly, for experts only).

I normally talk about Cossatot in conjunction with other parks. If you're not into camping or hiking, there's not a whole lot to do there. Whitewater rafting is generally not a family sport. At Cossatot, you'll find about 20 campsites (class D). Like I said, the hike can't be beat, but don't expect the comforts of home.

Free educational programs for the community are offered at Cossatot almost every weekend. The park interpreters are quirky, fun and educational. It's worth stopping if you're in the area. Queen Wilhelmina lodge is nearby if you don't like to rough it.

Cossatot is located just South of Mena. Take U.S. 278 from Little Rock.
