Park A Day: Mount Nebo State Park

Monday June 9, 2008
On June 9 of 1889 the Summit Park Hotel was built in the area that is now Mount Nebo State Park. It was a grand hotel that had three stories, 100 rooms and housed great events. The hotel included a bowling alley, billiard rooms, post office, doctor’s office and telephone exchange. Talk about full service. You got all of that for $2/day. Unfortunately, the hotel burned to the ground on February 26, 1918.

Today, there is no hotel. You can either rent a cabin or go camping on Mount Nebo. Even camping is more than $2/day. Mount Nebo has some great views and is one of the only places in the state where you can go hang gliding. There are 14 miles of trails and some of those miles are suitable for biking.

Mount Nebo is one of the parks I have yet to visit, but it's high on my list. Researching for information on this blog post, I found out that Mount Nebo was the first town in Arkansas to have an all female government. That was back in 1924. Mount Nebo was also Arkansas' second state park, becoming a park on July 14, 1933. On their birthday, they're having a special celebration. I'll probably try to head out there for that!
