Park A Day: Jacksonsport & Portfest

Since this weekend is Portfest along the White River in Newport, it seems fitting that today's park should be Jacksonsport State Park. Today, Jacksonsport is most widely known for Portfest, but the port has always been a reason to celebrate for the area.

It was used heavily in the Civil War because where there was water, there was power. As a matter of fact, on June 5, 1865, Confederate General Jeff "Swampfox" Thompson surrendered 6,000 troops to Lt. Colonel C. W Davis at the Jacksonport Landing. The port was used by both Confederate and Union troops.

June 5 is a big day in this park's history. On June 5, 1965 the Jacksonport Courthouse State Park was officially dedicated.

Portfest is June 6-7. I've never been to the park just for the park, but I have been to the White River and I have been to Portfest. I can recommend both, especially if you like the festival scene. Check out the Portfest site for more information.

I went to Portfest last year representing the Little Rock Zoo where we did a creature feature. I had some great catfish and froglegs. Also really nice people there.
