Park A Day: Toltec Mounds State Park

Monday June 2, 2008
On June 2, 1978 Toltec Mounds Archaeological State Park was designated as national historic landmark, opening the park for legions of Arkansas school kids to come. Many Arkansas schools visit this park during "Arkansas History" units. I visited the park twice when I was in school.

The park is an early settlement of the Plum Bayou culture and the mounds were built from A.D. 700 to 1050. When I was a kid, I was amazed as our tour guides told us about the mounds perfect alignment with celestial bodies.

Interpreters are available or you can take a self-guide tour. The tours generally follow the Knapp trailer which is 3/4 of a mile. Park interpreters are very educated on the history of the mounds, what archaeologists do when excavating and what the artifacts mean.

You can picnic in the park and guides tours are available. Call for details. The park is located in Scott. Click the title for more information.
