Arkansas Archeology Month
I wasn't aware that March was Arkansas Archeology Month, but it is and some of our state parks are celebrating. According to Trish Hollenbeck of the Northwest Arkansas Times, many lectures and exhibits have been planned.
The theme for the month is "Patterns of the Past" and the focus is on where and how people lived and how they used the Arkansas landscape. You can check the link for details on the events planned but they are taking place in Bella Vista, Petit Jean State Park, Rogers, Fort Smith and Washington County. Even the Museum of Discovery has a display of Arkansas Indian legacy.
Another option is to the visit the Toltec Mounds. The mounds were built by the Plum Bayou culture from A.D. 700 to 1050. They were not built by American Indians, but by a people who were believed to be the ancestors Native American Indians. Some schools in Arkansas use this location as a day trip during their Arkansas history units.
