Venomous Snakes

Friday June 10, 2005
Today while I was walking through my yard I saw a creature that inspires fear in most human beings. Was I afraid? Not at all. It was just a harmless king snake. Would I be afraid if I saw a copperhead like the one pictured? I'd walk the other way, that's for sure! Learn how to identify the snakes that lurk in Arkansas' woods that could be harmful to your health and that most Arkansas snakes are harmless.

I don't recommend killing these "serious snakes" if you see them. They serve a purpose too. Just let them go their way and you go yours. These guys hardly ever hurt anyone unless someone tries to hurt them.

Sometimes attempting to kill them can cause you more trouble that just leaving them alone. I'm sure you've all heard the urban legend about the guy who was attempting to shoot a snake and ended up shooting himself and dying from blood loss rather than the snake bite. While that story may be a little exaggerated, some people do really dumb things when they see snakes!
