Arkansas Olympians Running Tonight/Today

Wednesday August 20, 2008
Former Razorbacks Veronica Campbell-Brown and Fayetteville native Wallace Spearmon (he just made it it) will be competing in the 200m finals in Bejing. Actually, in Bejing, Spearman will be competing in a few hours. On NBC, it will be later tonight when you can see the race. Campbell-Brown's race is Thursday.

So far, these two runners are the Arkansans who've done the best, although we have a few Olympians who have yet to compete. Wish them luck and a gold medal for Arkansas! *Update* Wallace Spearmon finished third, but was disqualified for leaving his lane, so no bronze for him. You know he has to feel awful. Let's hope Veronica Campbell-Brown does better.

Bill Gwatney Laid To Rest

Monday August 18, 2008
Mourners gathered to remember Arkansas Democratic Party Chairman Bill Gwatney at his funeral this afternoon. All of the Arkansas power players were there, including the Clintons. The service seemed to have a good mix of political and personal statements and friends.

I haven't talked about the murder here, because everyone in the national and local news has been discussing it, as has everyone else in the blogsphere. However, I noticed today that many around the blogsphere have made disgruntled comments about the Clinton's attendance at the funeral, accusing them of trying to get some publicity out of every tragedy.

That's ridiculous. Gwatney has been a big name in Arkansas politics for a long time. Perhaps he and the Clintons were just friends and colleagues. I know if someone I worked with died in a horrible and senseless fashion, I would attend their funeral. Gwatney's death should be a reminder about what harm divisive politicking can do (even though we don't know all the details), instead of causing more of it. Those kind of comments frustrate me.

On a more positive note, there's an unofficial Bill Gwatney Tribute that has a lot of fun, personal memories on it. You can add your own if you have something you would like to say.

Blanchard Springs Caverns

Blanchard Springs Caverns
The Discovery Trail
Amanda Galiano
I spent this weekend exploring the caverns at Blanchard Springs with some friends. Of course, I took some photographs. If you haven't been to Blanchard Springs Caverns in a while, you really should check it out. I hadn't been in about 15 years, and had almost forgot aww-inspiring the caverns are.

We did both the dripstone (short) and discovery (long and steep) trails. The dripstone was my favorite because you got to see more of the pretty formations in the caverns. However, many of my friends preferred the tougher, 700 step discovery trail. On that trail, you learn about and see more of the cavern's "human" history. You more or less follow the path of the original explorers. You get to see the cave's natural entrance (from below, of course) and stream.

If you haven't been in a while, check out the great 58 degree weather in the caverns. See the photos and learn more information.
